From Rome to Venice

The curious history of a water-resistant plaster

This stucco was the first important ancient Roman plaster. The Romans discovered that by combining lime with the Terra di Pozzuoli (today pozzolana), an earth containing a large percentage of clay, they could obtain hydraulic lime. This type of lime hardens even underwater. This allowed them to build in the midst of rivers and in presence of large quantities of water and humidity.

In Venice, which is built on and surrounded by low waters, it was costly to bring any kind of waste out of the city. For this reason, old bricks, made of cooked clay (Terracotta in Italian), where smashed and mixed with lime to produce this red plaster. This was used on exterior walls because very resistant to the humidity levels typical of the Lagoon of Venice.
